How much are above-ground concrete pools?

Above-ground or partially out-of-ground concrete pools in Brisbane typically cost $70,000–$120,000+, more than a standard inground build of the same size. The extra cost comes from formwork, retaining structures, and cladding required where the pool sits above natural ground level. They’re common on Brisbane’s sloped blocks.

Why do above-ground concrete pools cost more — and are they worth it?

Brisbane has a lot of sloped blocks — particularly in the inner suburbs and hillside areas. For many of these properties, a standard fully-inground pool simply isn’t possible without major retaining work. An out-of-ground or partially above-ground concrete pool solves the problem, but it does come at a higher price.

Why the extra cost?

  • Formwork — Where the pool sits above existing ground level, temporary structures are needed to hold the concrete in place while it cures. That’s extra labour and materials.
  • Retaining and structural work — The above-ground sections need to be engineered to hold the water load, which means more steel and thicker concrete walls.
  • Cladding and finish — The exposed walls are visible, so they need to look good. Options include stone cladding, rendered and painted walls, tiling, or timber battens. Each adds cost but can look exceptional.
  • Paving and decking around raised pools — Creating a usable pool area around an elevated pool typically involves decking or paving that ties in with the height difference.

The upside? On a sloped block, an above-ground pool done well is often the best-looking outdoor space on the street. It can create a genuinely resort-style result that a flat-yard pool can’t match.

Cascade has built out-of-ground pools across Brisbane’s hillside suburbs. The quote process includes a site visit to assess the slope, access, and structural requirements — because no two sloped blocks are the same.
